MOBILE PHONES

If you are a regular viewer of any television current affairs programs, you will know that mobile phones have almost become an addiction of today's youth. There has been much publicity in an attempt to warn young consumers, most who have never borrowed money or even have a savings account, are about the perils of something as innocent as owning a mobile phone.

Many young people (and some, not so young too!) get caught up in the advertising hype and think they have the best deal, only to find out that their cheap monthly rental is a cover for exorbitant call costs, and it's not until they get their first monthly account that reality hits!

Sadly many young Australians have learned the hard way and bankruptcies caused by excessive mobile phone costs have taught them a very hard lesson.

However, mobile phones used sensibly can be very cost-effective. It all comes down to making sure you are aware of all the costs associated and keep control of your calling habits. Better still, the prepaid phones are a great idea. You know how much you're paying up front and when you run out of credit, you simply "buy more time"... but you are in control!

Other suggestions for managing your mobile phone include:

  • Be sure of what you're signing up for... read the small
    print and ask questions;

  • Don't get caught up with all the add-ons such as message
    bank, call diversion, etc. Are they really necessary?

  • Use a pin number to access your phone to stop
    others using
    your phone without your consent;

  • Make a decision (and stick to it), that your phone is for
    emergency situations only, not for socialising.

These are fairly sensible tips, however, as with anything new we can get excited and forget how costs can add up... and it's too late when you've received a bill that equals your monthly wages!

If you are in the market for a new mobile phone and are bamboozled by all the hype and options, visit www.phonechoice.com.au for an unbiased service on comparing the phones, plans and companies providing mobile telecommunications. The time will be well spent.
